Lighthouses are beautiful but also serve an important function. They help guide ships to safety and steer them clear of danger. We are called to be keepers of the light. "You are the light of the world," Jesus said. In the ancient Temple God told the priest, Aaron, to "keep the fire burning." On the day of Pentecost, Peter preached a fiery sermon and 3,000 people were saved. The Spirit had fallen like fire. We need to keep the fire burning in our lives! We need to tend it every day, fueling it with time in the Word and with the Lord. We can experience what the disicples felt when they encountered Jesus after the resurrection: "Didn’t our hearts burn within us?"

Cursing the darkness does nothing to drive back the darkness. A far more effective way to combat the darkness is to turn on a light. The most compelling and effective thing we can do as a church and as individuals is to allow our light to shine....
