As long as we don’t know who we are, we won’t know what we’re supposed to do with our lives. The priests and Levites asked John, "Who are you?" John told them all things he was not (Elijah, the Prophet,the Messiah). Then he told them, "I am the voice..." Knowing who you are supposed to be often begins with knowing who you’re not.
Instead of fighting for the spotlight like people often seem obsessed with doing, John took the spotlight away from himself and focused it on Jesus.
