Daniel Bentley - January 29, 2020 - Luke 1:5-17
The last words of the Old Testament read: "Behold, I am going to send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and terrible day of the LORD" (Malachi 4:5-6). Then, 400 years of silence. No words from the Lord. Finally, the silence was shattered by John the Baptist. For years, Zacharias and his wife prayed for a child. The angel Gabriel came to Zacharias saing, "Your prayer has been heard." They would bear a child who would be a great man: John the Baptist. Even Jesus once said, "Among those born of women, there is no one greater than John" (Luke 7:28). John had the unique privilege of presenting Jesus to the Jewish people as their Messiah. John’s greatness can also be seen is in the depth of his devotion to God, and in his humility. The last recorded words of John are, "He must become greater. I must become less" (John 3:30).
